At first glance, you might think that this was an alien blaster. Believe it or not, this is a real design! This model, the JLS Beretta RX-4 STORM is fitted to accept standard M4 magazines. It is very ergonomic and has an adjustable stock.

The first thing I noticed with the stock extended was that it moved in all directions and I had to super glue the retainer in the receiver to stop most of this movement. However even after being glued there was still a bit of play on the stock. The safety and selector switches located next to the trigger. The safety is a bar type similar to a L85 and the selector is pushed up for auto and down for single shot. Both are pretty solid and shouldn't give any problems. The hop can be adjusted by pulling the cocking lever backwards and turning the hop dial. This is similar to a M16/M4 hop up.

The magazine is released by a button on the right hand side of the gun and the button on the left hand side is false. I think JLS should have made the release on the left hand side as it means now that to remove the magazine you have to use your trigger hand (if you are right handed). To fit a battery the front fore grip needs to be removed and this is done by removing the large nut at the front of the fore grip and it slides off.

The foregrip will only hold a small battery as the room inside it is limited unless you fancy taking a Dremel to it.

The thread that holds the nut on is held on with super glue so I'm not sure it will stay there however if it comes loose then all you need to do is super glue it back in place.

When I chrono'd the RX4, it was firing at 380 FPS and I decided to fit another spring to bring the FPS down to sub 350 FPS.

To get to the gearbox you need to remove the stock, the pistol grip, front foregrip and then split the receiver in half. There are quite a few springs and pins etc. That could be lost easily so be careful taking the AEG apart.

The gearbox is a unique design and has a funky motor mount which can swing up and down. (more on this later).

Inside the gearbox, things look like a cross between a V2 and V3 gearbox. The tappet plate is unique, the piston head is vented, the bushings are metal and the gears seem well made. The usual half pound of grease is there as per most Chinese AEG's so it's worth spending a little time cleaning it out and re lubricating.

The nozzle is held in place by a bit that I have never seen before, however it looks to function similar to the lower plastic half of a TM M4 hop up. the top of the hop up is also very similar to a TM M4 hop up.

Well that’s the basic technical description out of the way, now I will talk about the things I have found, the problems and future uses for the gearbox. Considering that it uses M4 style magazines I was expecting it to have no trouble taking any magazine however only certain types will fit. I know that some Chinese mags will fit and other won't. Star mags don't fit and neither do TM mags. The problem seems to be the mag lock which is too thick in width and doesn't fit inside the little notch on the above magazines. Taking a file to it might help but I haven't tried it yet. The gearbox is a 3 handed gearbox for re-assemble. Anyone who works on gearbox will know what this means. The biggest problem being the anti reversal latch is loose fitting and trying to stop it falling over as you compress the spring and put the outer shell on needs 3 hands. It feels like a shotgun to handle because of the thick pistol grip. It's very comfortable to hold, and to be honest and seems quite chunky when held in the aim. The weight isn't that great because of the amount of plastic used however I'm sure the real steel version isn't much heavier. If you decide to replace the spring go for a M90 as a M95 takes it to a FPS of 345 - 358 which might be too hot for your site. Overall I would rate this AEG as a 6 out of 10. if you can be bothered to fix the stock wobble, replace the spring and mod the mag catch then you will have a very useful unique looking AEG.

One last point that I thought I would mention is the gearbox. because of the movable motor mount this gearbox could be squeezed into any number of stocks if someone wanted to make a project AEG. it might fit inside a Mini Ruger M14 stock, a PPSH 41 stock and even a M1 carbine. It has a lot of potential for modding and could be used in a whole host of different projects.
